Maryland safety inspection

Maryland State & Vehicle Inspection

A practical guide to Maryland’s required safety inspection, what the station checks, and what happens after the inspection.

Maryland State Inspections are available at Windsor Mill, Randallstown, and Rock Glen. Appointment availability and vehicle class should be confirmed with the selected shop.

What this inspection is for

Maryland’s safety inspection program is commonly part of titling or registering a used vehicle in the state and certain ownership-transfer situations. A licensed inspection station evaluates safety-related components against the current Maryland standards; it is not the same as a pre-purchase condition report or a rideshare-platform form.

What to bring

  • The vehicle and its keys
  • Current registration or ownership documents available for the vehicle
  • Photo identification and any MVA or dealer paperwork that applies to your transaction
  • Wheel-lock key and access to areas that may need inspection
  • Questions about recent repairs or known warning lights

What is typically checked

The exact procedure follows the applicable current Maryland or platform form. Typical categories include:

  • Brakes, steering, suspension, wheels, and tires
  • Lighting, glazing, mirrors, wipers, horn, and other required equipment
  • Seat belts, doors, latches, body and structural condition
  • Fuel, exhaust, emissions-related equipment, and under-hood items within the state procedure
  • Identification and other items required by the official Maryland inspection chart

How the appointment works

  1. 1

Choose a 7 Auto Care location and schedule the appropriate inspection.

  2. 2

A Maryland-authorized inspector follows the current state procedure and records the result electronically.

  3. 3

If the vehicle passes, the electronic inspection certificate can be used for the applicable MVA transaction; Maryland states the certificate is valid for 90 days.

  4. 4

If the vehicle does not pass, you receive the failed items and can discuss repair options. Reinspection rules and possible fees depend on timing, mileage, station, and whether repairs were completed at the inspecting station.

Just moved to Maryland?

Complete the safety-inspection step before registration.

If you are bringing an out-of-state vehicle with you, Maryland generally requires a valid Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate before the vehicle can be titled and registered here. New residents generally have 60 days to update title and registration. If plates are needed to obtain the inspection, the MVA describes a one-time 30-day temporary registration process.

Safety Equipment Repair Orders

Have a police repair order?

7 Auto Care can inspect and certify applicable corrected SERO items within its authorized capability. Current Maryland State Police guidance calls for repair within 10 days, certification within 30 days, and submission of the certified order as required.

Official requirements can change. This page summarizes current Maryland public guidance and does not replace instructions from the Maryland State Police or MVA.

Common questions

Clear answers before you hand over the keys.

Is a Maryland State Inspection the same as a maintenance inspection?

No. The state inspection follows Maryland’s safety standards for an official certificate. A maintenance or pre-purchase inspection can look more broadly at condition, upcoming service, and ownership risk.

What happens if my vehicle fails Maryland State Inspection?

The failed items are identified on the inspection report. 7 Auto Care can perform applicable repairs, but you choose where repairs are completed. Limited reinspection eligibility requires returning within 30 days and before the vehicle has been driven 1,000 miles. Exceeding 30 days or reaching 1,000 miles requires a complete new inspection, and newly observed safety defects can still matter.

How long is a Maryland inspection certificate valid?

Maryland’s current guidance states that the electronic inspection certificate is valid for 90 days. Confirm current MVA requirements for your specific transaction.

Will my vehicle pass Maryland inspection with window tint?

Passenger-car tint generally must allow at least 35% light through applicable windows. SUVs, vans, and small trucks have the 35% requirement on the front side windows, while rear-window rules differ. Windshield placement, reflective tint, prohibited colors, and medical exemptions have separate rules. The inspector applies the rule for your vehicle class and glass location.

Do you handle Maryland Safety Equipment Repair Orders?

Yes. Within its authorized capability, 7 Auto Care can inspect and certify applicable corrected SERO items. A SERO is different from a failed Maryland Safety Inspection: current Maryland State Police guidance calls for repair within 10 days, inspection/certification within 30 days, and submission of the certified order as required.

I just moved to Maryland. Do I need an inspection?

Maryland generally requires a valid Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate before an out-of-state vehicle can be titled and registered here. New residents generally have 60 days to update title and registration. The MVA may issue one 30-day temporary registration when plates are needed to obtain the inspection.

Can every vehicle be handled at every location?

The three shops perform Maryland State Inspections, but vehicle class, size, equipment, and appointment availability can matter. Call the location with details before bringing an unusual vehicle or trailer.
